Computerized Density Indicator

Advantages

We are proud to state that we are the first and only firm in India to develop and patent an electronic Instrument to quickly and simply measure and digitally display the corrected lactometer reading of a milk sample. This instrument is accurate to +/- 0.2 LR and can be used in the field as well as at laboratory level. When connected to electronic Milko Tester, it can directly show SNF also. There are nearly 3500 units operating in the field at this time.

We are aware of the industry's focus on quality and clean milk production and we believe our instrument Computerised Density Indicator (CDI) can play a significant role in the CMP Programme. We submit the following for your consideration:

Clean Milk Production : Is a process chain covering the following aspects of milk production -
Cattle shed cleanliness, animal health and hygiene, milking practices and hygiene, animal feeds (contamination due to feed pesticides, disinfectants, medication), cleanliness of milk vessels, transportation, Quality based incentives.

Milk Quality : Is a relative term. It means different things to different people.

-    Consumers judge quality by thickness, taste, smell, color etc;
-    Microbiologists judge solely by bacterial count;
-    Processors look mainly at fat% and SNF %.

While most dairies are busy checking for fat and snf only, the purity of milk is also an Important factor of its quality and cleanliness.

Pure milk contains natural high quality nutrients. Dairies pay for the milk based on predetermined Minimum quality standards. So people adulterate low quality milk with other food items of low quality to try and meet the quality parameters and make more money by selling the low quality milk. Some common examples are:

- Water is added to milk to increase quantity. However, adding 10% of water will decrease the fat content by about 11% of its actual value!! Addition of unhygienic water also increases the bacterial growth in milk, increasing the spoilage and decreasing its life.
- Sugar, maida flour, urea, salt etc are added to increase SNF. Adding 1% of salt will increase snf by 12 % of its actual value!!
- Dalda and vegetable oil is added to increase fat content by consuming adulterated milk, the consumer is exposed to health risks, does not get required nutrition from the milk, the dairy is paying for inferior quality etc.

Hence, to monitor/prevent adulteration, line testing of milk has to be carried out right from the village society to reception dock as a matter of routine.

SST ENGINEERS has developed the Computerized Density Indicator (C.D.I.) to facilitate monitoring of several quality factors of milk in conjunction with the milko tester (presently operated at most Primary societies in Maharashtra), this instrument will measure and display not only FAT% and SNF%, but also compute and display PROTEIN %, LACTOSE %, MINERAL % and ADDED WATER%.

CDI is a fully indigenous instrument based on SSTE’S own patent design. The Instrument is specifically designed for use at primary level milk collection societies. It utilizes true gravimetric method for checking of density. It is the only instrument that uses a true scientific method of testing. It is simple to use, clean, and maintain. There is no loss of sample quantity and no solutions are added to sample. There are over 3500 similar instruments already operating in the field since last 2 decades.

Comparison

In comparison to IR/Ultrasound based imported instruments (such as Lactoscan, Ecomilk etc) which are very expensive to maintain and costly to run. Our instrument is fully indigenous, easy and inexpensive to maintain. Secondly, IR/Ultrasonic instruments take 40-45 secs. per sample making collection slow and further decreasing the quality of the farmer’s raw milk. Thirdly, the IR/Ultrasonic based systems do not check density and derive the SNF by non gravimetric method therefore if salt and other adulterants are added the SNF shows high - which is not actually the case, resulting in inaccurate test figures. Fourthly and most importantly, the technology is imported and there is no control over the price and availability to maintain such equipment.

After installing the cdi at societies, the net increase in quality, results in benefiting the society by up to 15% Financially. this is because the average snf and density increases, resulting in better quality and less spoilage of milk. actual reports supporting below:

Society collecting 500 Ltrs / Shift (i.e 1000/day) will get net amount=0.66x1000= Rs. 660/-per day @ Rs 660/-per day the society will recover the cost of the instrument within 40 days. By installing this Instrument the net profit after 40 days is Rs. 19800/- Per Month.

Society collection 300 Ltrs / Shift (i.e. 600 Ltrs / Day) will get a net amount = 0.66 x 600 = rs 395/- Per day @ Rs 395/-per day the society will recover the cost of the instrument with in 64 days (2 Months) by installing this instrument the net profit after 64 days is Rs. 11850/- Per Month.

Society collection 100 Ltrs / Shift (i.e.200 Ltrs / Day) will get a net amount = 0.66 x 200 = rs 132/- Per day @ Rs 132/-per day the society will recover the cost of the instrument within 190 days (6 Months). By installing this instrument the net profit after 190 days is Rs. 3960/- Per month.

  Whilst addition of adulterants will basically result in increased SNF and hence indicate higher quality, In actual fact, certain basic parameters of milk cannot be changed by these methods. Using such invariables, the instrument is also programmed to identify and signal samples suspected of adulteration. Since various parameters of milk are subject to variations based on cattle breed, feed etc. These results can only be indicative. They must be further verified by actual laboratory tests by chemical analysis or spectroscopic instruments. However, the very fact that such suspected Adulteration can be identified at the village level itself this will act as a deterrent for such practices.

  Upon installing the unit you will see the difference in SNF in the table, this is a result of the Producer not being able to dilute or adulterate the milk before collection at the society. As, if the Fat is high and water is added the SNF will come down, and the sample will get a lower rate. Hence, adulteration and dilution is prevented. Consequently, the producer and the society get direct profits as shown in the table above as the Fat% and SNF% are increased.

 When the society supplies the dairy with a better quality of milk the dairy gains directly, as the processing cost is lower and quality is superior. Also, since the milk is not tampered, the life is prolonged and the bacterial count is controlled.

  We shall be happy to arrange trials etc as required to prove the efficacy of our product, upon hearing from you.
